20th August 2009

I caught my first wave on this date in Malibu, California. I was visiting the US for the first time and after seeing all the surfers I asked my parents if I could join a lesson. I got addicted immediately to the feeling of riding a wave and right there I knew this was my sport. After the trip I came back home to Gran Canaria and joined a surf school in La Cicer. I spent a year surfing as a Goofy foot (right foot forward), then I decided to change my stance into Regular where I felt more comfortable practicing sports like skateboarding and snowboard, probably the best decision I made.

East Coast GC

After spending my first couple of years surfing at the same beach in the north of the island, I decided to go with my dad and try the waves closer to my house in the east. I fell in love with this stretch of coastline, where more uncrowded waves broke. Although, most surfers hate it because of it’s strong winds and difficult conditions, I felt very comfortable there. With this comfort along with the help my coaches Gary and Bentor Gonzalez, I was able to push my surfing in every session.

Training in this ruthless conditions made me become a more complete surfer, being able to perform in any kind of surf. I believe that it has specially benefited my read of the waves and creativity. It has also helped me keeping a positive mindset in and out of the water no matter the adversities.

Making and editing my own surf videos is one of my biggest passions, here is one from home in Playa del Hombre.

Marco Leon Miranda Surf Competition

Competitions

I started competing in 2016, I was 15 and started feeling confident enough with my surfing where I could challenge myself to do good at a regional level. In 2018 I started seeing some results, a couple of third and second place finishes, I became more mature and started focusing a bit more in strategy, this was also the year where I competed for the first time at a national level. However in 2019 everything clicked, I competed in a QS event for the first time, the experience I gained there helped achieve a First place in an under 18 Canary Island competition as well as a First place in the Open category from the same event. After that I joined the University of San Diego A team and currently compete in the US College NSSA.

So far in 2022 I have competed in two Canary Islands’ events, getting Second place in under 21 and Fourth in Open division, in two QS events in Northern Spain and France and an NSSA college event at Blacks Beach, San Diego.

My short-term goal for the future is winning the NSSA next season, and my long-term goal is to win a major QS event, that is what I train myself everyday to achieve.

I want to thank my sponsors for supporting me, this wouldn’t be possible without them: Rock Islands surfboards, Rock Islands surf shop, Matuse wetsuits, Smith Optics, EQ Love sunscreen and Deflow surf accessories.
